Author Interview: Kaitlin Maitland

The Basics

– Genre(s): Erotic and Mainstream Romance, Suspense, Action, Sci-Fi, Western and some Fantasy. I write what moves me.
– Publisher(s): I’ve not been doing this long so I’m only at Red Rose Publishing and very happy there for the moment though I can’t say I won’t eventually submit elsewhere.

To Other Authors

– What are the three MOST important pieces of advice you would give to a brand new author?

1. Don’t ever let someone convince you to stop writing. If they can convince you to stop, you shouldn’t be doing it.
2. Write what you know. If you don’t know it, learn it. Research counts.
3. When someone critiques your writing, they aren’t critiquing you as a person. Accept criticism and learn from it, don’t freak out and quit writing.

– What’s your favorite way to advertise?

I’m a huge fan of the internet, especially Yahoo groups.

– What hard-knock lesson did the publishing world teach you (can be your own experience or someone else’s that you learned from)?

I haven’t had a lot of hard knocks yet but I know there’s one on the horizon somewhere and I have no doubt it’ll give me the smackdown.

– What are you reading, if anything, at the moment?

The Kitchen Boy by Robert Alexander. It’s a fictionalized account of the last days of the Romanovs in Post Imperial Russia and One More Bite, Jennifer Rardin’s newest Jaz Parks novel.

– Do you prefer ebooks or print for your reading pleasure?

Both. I buy a ton of both. Some days it’s just better to curl up with a traditional book and others I’d rather have a thousand titles at my fingertips to choose from.

– Name three of your all-time-favorite, read-them-over-and-over books.
Only three? Yikes!

Idle Curiosity Compels Me to Ask

– What inspired you to be a writer?

I got tired of life not going according to script and waiting for my favorite authors to write sequels.

– What do you do immediately after finishing a manuscript?

Put it away and start finishing the next work-in-progress on my long term writing plan. I have to give a new manuscript at least a week or two before I can look at it again with any objectivity.

– Do you talk to your characters or your muse or both?

My characters talk to me, scream at me actually, in my head. That is what determines which manuscript I work on. Whoever screams the loudest gets airtime. When I can hear the main character’s narrative it’s time to write their story.
